Embrace Change

The 21st century is an era of constant change and innovation, especially in the world of technology. With artificial intelligence (AI) making waves and reshaping the way we live and work, it’s no surprise that print OEMs are also feeling the pressure to evolve and keep up with the times. This week, we delve into two exciting topics in the tech world.

First, we’ll explore how print manufacturers can leverage data to gain a competitive edge in the industry, according to the Data Innovation Opportunity 2023 report by Quocirca.

Secondly, we’ll take a look at the rapidly growing field of AI, with a focus on ChatGPT, the fastest-growing application of all time.

Finally, Google enters the chatbot fray with its upcoming release of Google (Bard), and the AI realm is buzzing with excitement. Keep reading to learn more about the exciting changes happening in the tech world.

Three data-driven strategies for the print industry

Quocirca’s Data Innovation Opportunity 2023 report suggests that print manufacturers can gain a competitive advantage in their industry by utilizing data-driven strategies.

These areas are:

  1. MPS assessments can now consider sustainability by evaluating the environmental impact of a company’s print infrastructure offering solutions such as print management platforms and digital workflow automation to reduce the impact.
  2. MPS providers can help businesses protect sensitive information by analyzing print and scan usage, which is becoming increasingly important with the rise of remote work.
  3. MPS providers offer smart workspace platforms to help organizations operate sustainably by using occupancy data and environmental data to optimize performance.

What should you be doing?

To take advantage of these opportunities, the report suggests three steps:

  1. Embrace a data-driven approach by treating data as a strategic asset to extract valuable insights from the print ecosystem.
  2. Move quickly to a digital-first, data-driven model to gain a competitive advantage.
  3. Build greater data expertise and partnerships that extend to the use of machine learning and artificial intelligence.

In the World of AI, ChatGPT evolves.

ChatGPT is starting to heat up (as though it can get any hotter).  ChatGPT is the fastest-growing application of all time.  This is according to a UBS study (via CBS News), which claims that ChatGPT had 13 million unique visitors per day in January, which is more than double the visitors it had in December. ChatGPT has only been around two months (can you believe it?), and it already has 100 million monthly users, the study concluded. This growth rate outpaces popular apps like TikTok and Instagram, which took nine months and two and a half years, respectively, to reach 100 million monthly active users.

The report comes on the heels of the launch of ChatGPT Plus, a paid version of the chatbot that offers faster response times, priority access to new features, and access during peak usage times for a monthly fee of $20. Microsoft, a previous investor in OpenAI, has recently invested an additional $10 billion into the company and is said to be working on integrating ChatGPT into its services.

But green fields are quickly being populated as Google enters the chatbot fray with its offering named Bard.

The AI realm is buzzing:

  1. AI experts are cautiously optimistic about the future of ChatGPT and believe it could be a “Netscape Moment.
  2. The popularity of ChatGPT will likely lead to further developments in its capabilities.
  3. Google acknowledges the potential for creative expression but also the potential risks of fake content, taking a responsible approach to deployment.

What should you be doing?

  1. Evaluate the feasibility of transitioning to a more sustainable business model.
  2. Assess the potential costs and benefits of implementing environmentally friendly practices.
  3. Seek advice and resources from organizations that support sustainable business practices.

Google and Bard

Not to be outdone, Google announced the upcoming launch of its chatbot, Bard, designed to compete with OpenAI’s popular ChatGPT chatbot.

  1. Google’s New Bot: Bard is designed to compete with OpenAI’s popular ChatGPT chatbot and will be released in the coming weeks.
  2. Conversational Access to Knowledge: The chatbot will use a smaller version of Google’s powerful AI model called LaMDA to provide conversational access to the world’s knowledge.
  3. Availability for Developers: Although Bard will not be integrated into Google’s search box, the company plans to make its underlying technology available to developers through an API, like what OpenAI is doing with ChatGPT. CEO of Google, Pichai, did not announce a timeline for the API’s availability.

What should you be doing?

  1. Stay informed on the latest AI technology and its applications in your industry.
  2. Incorporate AI technology in your products or services to make them more efficient and provide added value to customers.
  3. Engage with AI developers and experts to understand the potential of AI technology for your business and explore ways to utilize it.

The pace of change keeps moving at breakneck speed. There are always updates.

Have a great week!
